Default Folder X and Panther
Description

Default Folder X 1.8 and earlier will crash all applications in Panther. Before installing Panther, you must update to Default Folder X 1.9.6 or higher. The update is free and can be downloaded from:

http://www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX/release.html

Plain and simple, we apologize for this mess. After installing Panther, you will not be able to run any applications if Default Folder X 1.8 (or earlier) is turned on.

The latest version of Default Folder X works fine under Panther, but you must install it to fix the problem. This is difficult if you've already upgraded to Panther and are suffering from this bug. With an old version of Default Folder X running, you will not be able to run the installer or open System Preferences to turn off Default Folder X.

If you have already installed Panther, you must log in without launching Default Folder X. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. If you have your computer set to automatically log in after starting up, hold down the shift key as soon as the Mac OS X progress bar appears during startup. You will then be prompted to log in rather than being logged in automatically.

  2. Enter your password and then hold the shift key down while logging in. Keep the Shift key held down until you see the menu bar. This will disable all applications that normally run at log-in time.

  3. Once you have logged in without Default Folder X running, immediately open System Preferences, select Default Folder X, and turn off its "Launch at Login" option. You can then proceed to download and install the new version of Default Folder X from the URL above.

If you are running Mac OS 10.1 or 10.0, and are about to upgrade to Panther, turn off Default Folder X's "Launch at Login" setting in System Preferences.

You will not be able to install Default Folder X 1.9.6 until after you have installed Panther because version 1.9.6 requires Mac OS 10.2 or higher. By turning off the "Launch at Login" option, you will prevent Default Folder X from automatically launching after you install Panther. This will avoid the problem and allow you to download and install Default Folder 1.9.6 normally.

We apologize for this problem and for the inconvenience and trouble it will undoubtedly cause some users. We have set up a special priority email address for users who need assistance - for fastest response they can contact panther@stclairsoft.com.

As a long-term Mac user, i have installed demo software beyond count. Yours is one of the few that I've seen the worth in investing in.

It's one of those programs that I wonder how I lived without for so long. Before I was constantly clicking through directories every time I wanted to open, save or attach a file. Now I do almost everything in just a few clicks.
